Two things I have come to realize that are difficult for humans to do are patience and rest in the Lord, however, Christians aren’t exempted.
Recently I was in a function where I had to jump the queue to be served tea. Why did I do such a thing? Meals were exhausted because I followed the due process a day before; but afterward, I felt guilty.
Everyone seems to be in a rush. We want to get rich quickly. We want to control our lives as fast as possible. Parents want to see their children succeed as fast as they could. We all are in the competitive race of life that fuels our pride for accomplishment.
But when it comes to divine control, no one seems to trust in the Lord because it takes longer than usual. We want to do what we think we know best. We don’t want to appear slow in our progress so that we can catch up with the race that life has placed us in. Depending on God seems to be termed, “Unseriousness” that nobody wants to appear so.
But for those who want God’s guidance in their choice of a life partner, you need to pay attention to the information that I’d share.
The Biblical principle which seemed old-fashioned to many new school relationship coaches, believers, and preachers is the waiting on God and rest approach.
Adam waited on God to be guided on who to marry, and in the process, he was made to fall into a deep sleep (Rest). I hope you know that impatience could have made him choose a dog who was best termed as man’s companion or any animal from the apes family who looked like a man.
Isaac was never anxious to be married, he trusted his father’s ability to choose for him, and that should be a symbolic pattern for believers to emulate as they trust in God. I do not mean that your parents should choose for you, but having God as your Father should guide you if you trust His fatherhood.
Do you want to know the right person that God has prepared for you? While trusting in Him, I beseech you to do this – rest.
What does it mean to rest?
Having consulted the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the following definitions best describe what you need to understand about rest.
Having “peace of mind or spirit,” “to be free from anxiety or disturbance,” “to cease from action or motion.” However, the Hebrew word for Rest is “Damam,” and one of the meanings is, “quiet self.” You can’t rest in the Lord if self within is noisy.
Self is that voice within that reminds you of your biological age, it reminds you about others who have gotten married with children. It scorns you for trusting in God as it suggests means of fulfilling God’s promises, in case He has given you revelation about whom He’s preparing for you.
If self isn’t put to rest in the Lord or silenced, it’ll be difficult for you to know the right person. Self speaks to mislead, confuse and deceive you through the voice of the flesh.
And to help you understand this, the Holy Spirit spoke through David in his Psalms, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.” – Psalms 37:7 KJV
How can I rest in the Lord?
It is self that must be put to rest. When self is made to rest, you’d be free from anxiety, worry, or depression that comes with waiting on the Lord for guidance.
If you are to rest in the Lord, you must allow Him to take the wheel of your life. God and the flesh cannot steer the wheel of your life. God takes over when self has been crushed on the Cross by the power of the Holy Ghost.
When self decreases, then He can increase in your life.
Next is that you must enter into His rest so that you can cease from your labor.
What should I do while resting in the Lord?
After you have entered into His, quit looking for whom to marry. Stop bothering yourself on who she is or where he’s going to come from. One thing you need to do and to keep doing is to follow His leading. This takes a lot of trust and obedience.
I really must say that it’s difficult to rest in the Lord when pressure from within and without are so alarming but it’s possible when you hold onto the Biblical principle.
In my case, I got revelation on whom to marry over three years ago. At some point, I tried to fulfill His promise, the more I tried, the more confused I became. My mind was so disturbed that when I sight ladies that matched the revelation He gave, I was in a state of unrest. Is she the one?
But the day I got a glimpse of this secret of resting in the Lord, my worries, confusion, and unrest fizzled away. Whilst resting in the Lord, keep praying, keep studying the word and let your ears be so close to His heart so that you can know what He says per time.
